I loved The Thirteenth Tale, and envy those about to read it for the first time! That didn't prevent me from reading it a second time, though :)

"Bathory" sounds good. I'll keep my eyes open for it. I am chastened to say that I have never read "The Other Boleyn Girl." I read Philippa Gregory's early work (Wideacre etc.) and found it impresive but too bleak for me. Maybe I should try her more recent stuff.

Recently, I picked up a book called "Bathory: Memoir of a Countess" on Amazon (ISBN 1439201749). It's a tale of the real-life Elizabeth Bathory from Hungary in the Middle Ages. Excellent read, and includes a map, ancestral chart and pretty good reading list at the end for us history fans. Another I just finished reading is "The Other Boleyn Girl" (have you seen the movie? It's not nearly as good as the book!).

I read The Historian last year. I was underwhelmed --- as a kind of junky, genre novel it was just fine, but I know it had pretensions to literary fiction that, for me, were not met. I'd love to hear what you thought when you're done.

The 13th Tale will not disappoint.

Okay, okay, I'll add it to the pile! BTW, did you ever read The Historian? Just started it and am wondering whether it will be my kind of thing or not...

I do miss that aspect of living out here - being so close to much older history. Glad you had a great time at the cottage :)

Beverly Swerling's novel Shadowbrook uses Quebec during the French and Indian War as one of its settings. You might want to take a look at it, if you haven't read it already.

And welcome back!
